From
I. aphylla

I. aphylla crossed with tall bearded iris are producing these beautiful, diminutive iris. The seedlings vary in size from a few inches tall to tall bearded height. They come in as many color variation as can be found among our modern tall iris. Yet, all are smaller versions. As time goes by, many of our newer seedlings bloom in the spring as well as mid summer into the fall. They are ideal for small gardens, or as border plantings. They are very hardy and do best when subject to cool and/or cold winters.

To
Modern median iris

We began hybridizing with the species I. aphylla in 1967. It took 18 years before we were satisfied that we had a true miniature of a tall bearded iris. We named our seedling PAYOFF.
See photo of PAYOFF and one of its tall bearded grandparents CHATEAU, in the gallery. As the years rolled by, we have introduced iris in most classifications from I. aphylla clones and/or seedlings of I. aphylla crosses. Some are very small like our Standard Dwarf Bearded SLICK TRICK, which consistently carries 4 buds. Then there is our very floriferous, small flowered, tall bearded BOUQUET MAGIC. Most of our seedlings fall into the Intermediate classification (16 – 27 inches tall) and most tend to bloom a little earlier in spring than the tall bearded iris.
